Why 28-day storage billing costs more than a calendar month

The word “monthly” on a quote is not always 12 bills a year. Turn on the 28-day toggle on the calculator and the receipt converts the billed rent to a calendar-month number.

Worked example

They said $100.00 a month

Estimate using the same 13 ÷ 12 math as the receipt. Not a live facility quote.

As billed, 28 days

$100.00

Calendar-month equivalent

$108.33

12 calendar months$1,200.00
13 twenty-eight-day bills$1,300.00
12 calendar-month bills
$1,200.00
13 bills on a 28-day cycle
$1,300.00
Extra over a year, before insurance
$100.00

A calendar month is one of twelve periods in a year. A 28-day cycle is one of thirteen. If the facility quotes $100.00 “a month” and bills every 28 days, you are looking at about $108.33 on a calendar-month basis before insurance or an admin fee. That is the same conversion the receipt uses when you flip the toggle on.

Slate wrote about this shift in January 2025, in the same story as first-year rent increases. The article is about how storage operators changed billing, not a price for your ZIP. This page does not look up a live facility rate and has no affiliate links.

The hike page is the other half of the bill: promo rent that jumps after you sign. Twenty-eight-day billing can sit on top of that teaser, which is why the calculator keeps them as separate switches.

Ask at the counter whether they bill every 28 days or once a calendar month, and get the answer in writing. Then type the advertised rent they gave you and turn the toggle on so the receipt shows the calendar-month line.
